Tips for Family Travel
Traveling to almost 30 countries with young kids I’ve learned a little something about crafting vacations that the kids love and remember but that are also sophisticated and fun for the adults. Here are five tips for making summer travel gratifying for the entire family:
1) Book a family-oriented walking tour
No matter where you’re going, there’s likely a company that offers walking tours through certain neighborhoods or museums. Select one that’s geared toward the kids. Good walking tours are interactive and highly educational, without the kids even realizing how much they’re learning. And given that we parents have forgotten most of the history that we learned in school, they’re great for us too! My family has now done walking tours in Paris, Florence, Athens, Ephesus (Turkey) and Valletta (Malta). I especially like those we’ve done with Context Travel and Paris Muse. An added benefit: By arranging museum tours in advance, you can generally skip the lines. With our guide from Paris Muse we walked right past an hour-long queue at the Louvre.

Yep, and I have a lot more fun traveling with them than traveling without them.

Great tips!!
I really like the number 4, about the romantic & family hotels. I have some friends that always complain about the lack of romantic stuff to do while traveling with kids, so that´s a great mix!
Also the cooking class looks like lots of fun !
Happy Travels,
Nat

I admire you for traveling with kids to so many places. It’s doing them a lot of good to see how other people live. I’m sure it’s not easy for you, but I bet you are having a lot of fun.

Thanks Anda! I loved traveling with friends or solo to 70+ countries, but the 30 that I’ve traveled to with my kids have been far more rewarding. It’s really fun to see everywhere through my kids’ eyes. Plus I love involving them in the planning – makes for a better trip than anything I could do on my own!

We want to take our daughter and her family (3 kids) to Hawaii over Christmas break but prices seem outrageous and not accommodating 7 people…any suggestions?

Hotel prices or flight prices? I always try to use frequent flier miles for Hawaii flights. For a place to stay, I’d do a vacation rental. Check out http://www.vrbo.com. I’m finding a lot of Hawaii properties that can accommodate 7 during that timeframe for $250-400/night.
