Family Travel Resources
The theme of my website is Take Your Kids Everywhere. I want to encourage you to take your kids to adventurous, cool, amazing places in the world. I want to inspire you to find a destination you’ve never been to, book plane tickets, book a cool hotel, plan the most amazing/educational activities and go. Obviously that requires money, and while I plan obsessively and travel hack to get plane tickets for free or as little as possible, and I try to choose less-expensive travel dates and destinations, I don’t focus my writing on how to make each trip work financially. Everyone has different budgets and access to different airports, and there’s no way to tailor this content to everyone. And I’m never going to write about girlfriend getaways, or pure budget travel, or local trips from Cincinnati, or nomadic travel, or a lot of other things that don’t fit the way we travel.
But if you’re looking for any of the above, fear not! I’ve got you covered. Here are my favorite resources:
Travel hacking refers to the process of using frequent flier miles, hotel rewards and other tricks to travel largely for free. It requires work, but it can open up the world to you and your kids. I wrote about how to make family travel affordable here, and one of my main tips is to play the frequent flier game. We couldn’t travel nearly as much as we do if we were paying for all of our tickets.
I highly recommend following Johnny Jet and The Points Guy for hacking tips. If you want to move beyond those, there’s a good list of travel hacking sites at TravelTheGlobe4Less. Play the game! Next time you find a cool destination, don’t do a quick airfare search and say “Oh well, it’s $1500 a ticket. I can’t afford that.” Ask yourself instead “how do I get there for free?”.
Other Travel Blogs
I’m going to keep taking my kids to the coolest places I can find and writing about it. I’ll also be expanding my list of California Getaway ideas. If you’re looking for information on places we haven’t been, or destinations that fit into different budgets, there are a lot of excellent family travel resources out there – listed below. Most family-travel writers write about broad spectrums of travel, so it’s impossible to classify all of these websites based on exact niches. Any that skew overwhelmingly into one category I’ve included in that category. Otherwise there’s a general category at the end that includes a lot of my favorite sites, so don’t overlook those.
Categories below are:
